We celebrate the 200th<\/sup> anniversary of M\u00f3r J\u00f3kai\u2019s birth with an exhibition on local history, dedicated to the hero of his 1879 novel, Rab R\u00e1by<\/em> (R\u00e1by, the Prisoner), the famous and infamous M\u00e1ty\u00e1st R\u00e1by, whose adventures are set in Szentendre. R\u00e1by became a household name thanks to J\u00f3kai\u2019s book, but it is a little known fact that he was not a figment of the novelist\u2019s imagination. R\u00e1by published an autobiography in 1797, and there are countless documents in the archives that attest to his existence. He is said to have been sent to Szentendre by Joseph II to investigate financial crimes, and he is said to have had a house in the town… But how much of this is true?<\/p>\n

J\u00f3kai adopted his adventures from R\u00e1by\u2019s memoirs\u2014and added countless exciting secondary story lines and a liberal dose of humour, almost completely transforming the character of the real man in the process. This exhibition looks at some episodes of the \u2018R\u00e1by Story\u2019 from three angles, namely, R\u00e1by\u2019s own account, his life as reconstructed on the basis of historical sources, and, of course, J\u00f3kai\u2019s version. This triple interpretation allows us to present a more nuanced view of M\u00e1ty\u00e1s R\u00e1by\u2019s story.<\/p>\n

We apply an interdisciplinary approach, bringing into play the artistic aspects of the subject alongside its historical and literary facets. The R\u00e1by House, which was built in 1768, became a perennial subject of Szentendre\u2019s painters in the 20th century, and we present a selection of works that feature the building, by Istv\u00e1n Ilosvai Varga, J\u00f3zsef B\u00e1n\u00e1ti Sver\u00e1k and Ern\u0151 Jeges, among others. In addition, J\u00f3kai\u2019s personal relics also complement the exhibition.<\/p>\n

This exhibition looks into the reasons why M\u00e1ty\u00e1s R\u00e1by came to Szentendre in 1784; who owned the R\u00e1by House; why he wrote his denunciations; whom he fell out with in the town; his years of imprisonment in the Pest county hall; and how he attempted to have his book published abroad, allegedly in Strasbourg.<\/p>\n\t<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
